Counselling and therapy for eating disorders: binge eating

Overeating is a chronic problem in many industrial nations today and one which has led to an epidemic of obesity across all age groups. For many individuals, overeating is a daily habit that can result in serious health and emotional issues. A lifetime of overeating can result in obesity, heart problems, diabetes and a multitude of other medical problems. A person’s propensity to overeat can be caused by a number of factors, but is often the result of underlying emotional issues which, if left unaddressed, can lead to a complicated and unhealthy relationship with food. What is overeating?

In simple terms, overeating is eating too much food at any time. This can include eating too much during meals or eating too many snacks. Physically, the stomach is designed to only hold enough food as is required to reasonably sustain the body. In actuality, the size of most stomachs is about that of a single fist. However, many of us have very poor eating habits and may eat as much food as two, three or even more fists in a single sitting.

Why is overeating dangerous?

Overeating can lead to serious health problems because of the weight gain that usually accompanies eating far too much food. Below are some examples. Overeating can lead to the development of diabetes. Diabetes is a substantial and significant health issue that can result in nerve damage to feet and hands, visual distortions and blindness, loss of limbs, circulation problems and impotency problems in men.

Overeating can also result in obseity and/or high blood cholesterol levels which lead to heart problems, such artery blockages, heart attacks (leading to open heart surgery), and arrhythmias. Other health problems associated with overeating and obesity include high blood pressure, stroke, swelling of the feet, breathing problems, sleep apnea, generally poor cardiovascular fitness, joint and knee pains, and problems with walking and general mobility.

What are the emotional issues associated with overeating?

Some people overeat as a way to avoid negative emotions or feelings of low self-esteem. The food intake helps to distract us from our emotions, and we start to use food as a way of repressing our unhappy, angry or upset feelings. For many of us, it seems easier and less confrontational to simply sit down in front of the television on the sofa and eat our favorite ice cream, chocolate or treat, rather than think about our emotional issues or relationship problems.

How can I get help with a habit of overeating?

Talking to a counsellor, psychologist or therapist about eating habits is a healthy first step to improving our relationship with food. A trained therapist can help you identify why you are eating too much and teach you better coping skills for eating and for dealing with your emotions.
